The Abbas and Ammas Have It

Amma Theodora said, “Let us strive to enter by the narrow gate. Just as the trees cannot bear fruit if they have not stood before the winter’s storms, so it is with us. This present age is a storm; and it is only through many trials and temptations that we can obtain inheritance in the kingdom of heaven.”

What, specifically, makes this "present age" a storm?

Amma Theodora was talking about the 5th century. Our storm is secularism, I believe.

Interesingly, I was talking to a priest from New Orleans (who has lost vitually everything) and he said that, regardless of 'why' Katrina happened, "This is a cleansing for New Orleans. Now there are no abortions happening in N.O., no witchcraft, no voodoo, no 'Southern Decadence' party, no prostitution, etc." A very interesting perspective.

Wow. Many clergy (not you Father) of late continue to genuinely surprise and disappoint me.

What church affiliation was this clergy a member of?

I'm with you C. Seems to me like Christ reserved His harshest criticism for the religious leaders of His day...those who congratulated themselves on their own righteousness while casting dispersions on those around them...who were in fact the ones Christ chose to hang out with.

Perhaps the clergy of New Orleans would do better to ask themselves if the prevelence of evil in that city is not a relflection of their own ineffectiveness. Seems to me the folks targeted for blame are the ones who were drawn to Christ in droves.
