A Holy Christmas Season

Listening to the radio in the car today, I noticed that the 'contemporary Christian' radio station was already done with Chirstmas music and the radio annoucers were talking about the 'great sales' in the stores. My 3 year old yelled from the back seat, 'put on some Christmas music, Daddy, please!'

The madness is over, and now, as Christians over the centuries have done--let's have a holy Christmas season. The Incarnation can never be put away with the boxes and the presents. There really are twelve days between now and Epiphany and there is every reason to keep singing carols and to keep saying 'Merry Christmas!' We are a people healed by that which was assumed, the flesh of Jesus son of Mary, Son of God.

So---'Merry Christ-mass!'

Quite pointedly, yet cheerfully, I wish all a Merry Second (third, fourth, fifth, etc.) Day of Christmas. They are confused. I am bemused.

Amen and Amen! It drives me nuts that the people of my evangelical church are through with Christmas already. I say Merry Christmas and they look at me like I'm from another planet.

The Jews celebrate Hannakuh and other feasts for many, many days. The Muslims celebrate their holy days for many days. Even Kwanza lasts until January 1. Why do Christians let the world and the retailers tell us how to celebrate Christmas? Why only one day? This is historically inaccurate and unfortunately reductionistic.

It definitely seems like some could use a history lesson on how the church has historically celebrated one of its highest and holiest seasons - Christmas! Not to mention Advent, Lent, Easter, etc. Many evangelicals (especially those in Baptist, Pentecostal, non-denominational churches, etc) are suspicious of the church calendar and I really have no idea why. One need not be Catholic or Orthodox or Episcopalian or whatever to walk with Christ through the Christian year. One must just love Jesus!

It sure seems too me like we could use an Ancient-Future Faith. ;)

    At any rate...Merry Christmas!!!

    Joyeux Noel x 12.

Because I am divorced, my sons and I often times end up celebrating Christmas after the 25th and have actually come to prefer it. All of the whirl and hustle and bustle of church activity and parties is over and we can relax and enjoy ourselves.
